Following my usual routine when I arrived home from work I checked the mail. Amongst all the junk mail there was an envelope from the Department of the Interior. Now, I didn't connect the dots right away as to where this envelope was really coming from. I open it up and I see the logo for the National Park Service, as I pull the paper out a little further I notice the words "Backcountry Permit". Dummy me - In my head I'm thinking, "permit for what?". Then I read the words "Grand Canyon National Park". HOLY ****! Our application has been ACCEPTED!!!
I can't believe it!! Our application was accepted and it was accepted with our first choices - 2 nights at Bright Angel Campground and 1 night at the Indian Gardens campground.I really didn't think that we had any chance at all of actually getting the permit.....and especially this soon! It only took them 10 days for the approval and my receipt of the notification. Call me cynical but I did not believe that any government agency would do anything faster than their stated timeframe - in this case the 3-6 weeks. Anyway, after I realized what I was looking at I handed Darren the envelope and said, "We got our permit. I guess we had really start working on getting in shape." He looked at the papers and said, "Holy crap! I didn't think we would really get it!". We just stood there staring at each other - thinking the same thing - "Oh dear God. We really haven't been working out because we really believed that our request would be denied. Now we have to step it up, big time!" So now, a new journey begins for us...... |
