We (the family) have fallen off the 'get in shape for the trail' wagon and we need to really climb back on! Yesterday we helped the JROTC with one of their annual fundraisers and of course a lot of the conversation, particularly among the adults, was about the trail trip. There is some good news and some bad news......the good news--the hiking portion of the trip is only 21 miles over 3 days. How is that good? Because it used to be billed as 60 miles. Now for the bad news, those 3 days we have to primitive camp. Ugh! I can live with camping, but I would really like to have a bathroom!!!! The JROTC kids have begun their training after school now. They are given weighted packs and then they go up and down the football bleachers for at least an hour after school 3 days per week. Colonel seemed a bit concerned about Darren's physical condition so he has been ordered to report to training on Monday afternoon. I think he just wants to see him in action.....but that was pretty funny. Anyway, between now and then we really have to get back to walking and working out. We pretty much fell off that wagon by going to Arizona. That small change in routine was enough to throw us off course. Not to mention that life is just plain busy! "Life is what gets in the way when you're trying to do other things." It's been so busy at work and home that I've hardly been to yoga class this entire month. The good news there is that at least the 2 yoga classes that I have managed to attend have been the power yoga classes. Our renewed motivation prompted us to come home last evening, throw on our weighted packs and hit the regular trail at the Red Bug Slough. We have determined for sure now that this trail is just under 2 1/2 miles. Which is a good gauge for working up to our 21 miles in 3 days. After our first circuit we came back to the house to adjust my pack. While the weight was not too troublesome to carry, the pack was. The pack is just too big for me, in its original position the weights just pull the pack backwards (naturally) but because it doesn't fit right it wants to pull me over backwards, so to compensate I am leaning too far forward throwing everything off!! Not good. However, when we lower the straps it creates a whole new set of problems. The weight sits better but since it is still naturally pulling backward this forces the chest strap to slide up and choke me. I think we just need to face the fact that I'm going to have to get a new pack and have it properly fitted. So, the second circuit I did without the pack. With only 11 weeks to go we need to really get motivated and get moving! If anyone has any great motivation tips send them along! We're going to need it. |
